For over one billion Muslims throughout
the world, Ramadan or Ramazan is a special month of the year. During
the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset every day
abstaining from food and drink. Those who are sick, elderly, or
on a journey, and women who are pregnant or nursing are exempted
to break the fast and make up an equal number of days later in the
year. If they are physically unable to do this, they must feed a
needy person for every day missed. The fasting during Ramadan is
regarded principally as a method of self purification. By cutting
oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting
person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry as well as growth
in one's spiritual life. The holy month of Ramadan unites all Muslims
in fasting, worship and prayer. It is a time for contemplation,
spirituality and brotherhood.
Ramadan was the month in which the first verses of the holy Qur'an
were revealed to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). It is a time for inner
reflection, devotion to God and self-control. The sighting of the
new moon at the end of Ramadan heralds the celebration of Ramadan
Eid or Eid ul-Fitr.
